The car horn serves as a manual warning signal for other road users. Its proper functioning is relevant for passing the roadworthiness test.

Construction and function of the horn

The car horn is an electrical component. Its construction is kept as simple and robust as possible. This keeps the purchase price low and ensures a long service life.

The horn is attached to the body with an iron bar and is connected to the car circuit by two contacts. It is not grounded through the body. The connection is usually made through a pre-made double plug.

The horn is usually located behind the front bumper. It can also be mounted behind the radiator grille. The only important thing is that the sound it produces is emitted in a conical shape towards the front. Changing the horn reduces its effect.

The horn works electromagnetically. Inside is an electrically switchable magnet with an interrupting contact. The electromagnet attracts an iron core which is bonded to a thin sheet metal membrane. It is switched off again via a switch when the electromagnet attracts the iron core. A spring resets it and the circuit starts again. This vibration occurs hundreds of times per minute and produces the typical horn sound.

Horn defects

A horn can fail due to moisture penetration. If internal components such as switch contacts or copper coils corrode, the horn is damaged and can no longer be repaired. Such a failure is detected when it no longer fulfills its function. If it makes only a faint sound, repair can be attempted. A horn has an adjustment screw with which the switch contact can be adjusted. If this screw is turned, in most cases it will work properly again.
